New multi-tracking railway projects to Jabalpur, Pench National Park & Dhuandhar Waterfall

Major Railway Expansion Across Four States: The Indian Railways is set to strengthen rail connectivity in central and eastern India with three major multi-tracking projects approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With an investment of Rs. 9,072 crore, these projects include the doubling of the Gondia–Jabalpur line, and the addition of third and fourth lines on the Punarakh–Kiul and Gamharia–Chandil routes. Covering eight districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, the new lines will add around 307 kilometers to the existing network and are expected to be completed by 2030-31.

Benefits for Commuters and Villages

These railway upgrades will improve connectivity for approximately 5,407 villages, benefiting nearly 98 lakh people. Commuters can expect faster and more reliable train services as the additional tracks will reduce congestion and streamline operations, making travel smoother and more efficient.

Boost to Tourism

The improved railway lines will make it easier for people to reach many well-known tourist spots. Travelers will find it easier to visit the Kachnar Shiv Temple and Dhuandhar Waterfall in Jabalpur, Pench and Kanha National Parks, Bargi Dam, Chandil Dam, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, and other scenic spots. This improved connectivity is likely to encourage more domestic and regional tourism in these areas.

Economic Impact

These multi-tracking projects are important for freight transport, as the routes handle coal, steel, cement, ballast, fly ash, iron ore, food grains, fertilizers, POL and other essential goods. With the increased track capacity, Indian Railways is expected to manage an additional 52 million tonnes of freight annually, strengthening trade and supporting economic growth in the region.

Part of the PM-Gati Shakti Plan

The projects are aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated planning to enhance transportation networks. By improving multi-modal connectivity and facilitating smoother movement of people and goods, these projects aim to boost logistics efficiency, trade, and regional development.
