Pench Tiger Reserve

A Wild Treasure Of Central India

Pench National Park is one of the beautiful and amazing tiger reserves of Central India that lies between the serene mountain range of Satpura. The beauty of Pench is not less than the popular parks like Bandhavgarh and Kanha, however, it is less talked about among all. But you will always find the most wildlife lovers at this park as its loyal fanbase. Pench River which is one of the important parts of this region, flows in the region of Totladoh built over Meghdoot. It creates a large water body of around 72 sq. km. that covers almost 54 sq. km. area of Madhya Pradesh and 18 sq. km. of Maharashtra.

The Story of Royal Bengal Tiger and Mowgli!

The largest attraction covered by Pench Tiger Reserve is its Royal Bengal Tigers. According to the last census report, around 53 to 75 tigers have been found in Pench National Park, and about 80 more tigers live in the reserve area. This is the same forest that inspired the story of Rudyard Kipling's famous character Mowgli and his enemy Sher Khan. Due to the continuous conservation efforts of the forest department, Pench has become famous as a well-managed tiger reserve. The BBC documentary "Tiger - Spy in The Jungle" is also based on this region, which has attracted more tourists here. Naturalist Captain J. Forsyth also wrote about the wildlife reserves of the Satpura region in his book, which has become a big attraction for wildlife lovers.

Connection B/w Mogwli And Pench
The greatest historical significance of Pench National Park is connected with the story of Mowgli. In 1831, a child was caught near Satbawadi village (Seoni) who had grown up among bears and wolves. Based on this incident, Sir William Henry Sliman wrote a book "An account of wolves’ nurturing children in their dens", which perhaps inspired Rudyard Kipling to write "The Jungle Book".

Establishment & Development
The Pench is located in the Chhindwara and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh and some part of it also falls in Maharashtra state. Initially, it was declared as a sanctuary. After this, after 10 years it got the status of National Park as the Pench National Park. It was made a part of Project Tiger by keeping in mind the protection of forests and wildlife.
