Pench Forest Rest House

Pench Forest Rest House: Stay Inside Mowgli’s Forest

A Pench forest rest house lets you sleep inside the tiger reserve. There are three forest guest houses to choose from: Karmajhiri, Ghatkohka and Rukhad. The rooms are simple and comfortable, while the natural surroundings and easy access to the safari gate make this a great base for your trip. If you want a stay that feels like the real jungle and not a resort, start with these three.

What Is a Pench Forest Rest House?

It is a government guest house run by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department. The Field Director of Pench Tiger Reserve, based in Seoni, looks after these places. Forest officers and wildlife visitors have used them for many years. The buildings are plain and practical, and many have a colonial look, with thick walls and high ceilings that keep the rooms cool in summer. Don’t expect resort-style extras. What you get is a quiet night, forest sounds in the morning and a short ride to the safari entry.

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling drew inspiration from Pench’s forest. That is one reason many travellers pick these rest houses. Sleeping so close to the forest edge fits the story well.

Karmajhiri Forest Rest House

Karmajhiri Forest Rest House stands right beside the Karmajhiri gate, at the northern edge of Pench in Seoni district. Most people who look for a forest rest house in Karmajhiri are looking for this one. You can pick from VIP rooms, standard rooms or a dormitory, so it works whether you come as a couple, with your family or with a few friends. A canteen is on site. Meals cost extra and are not part of the room price.

Safaris here feel calmer. Fewer vehicles come to Karmajhiri than to the busier Turia side, so the forest is less crowded. The zone has teak forest, plenty of birds and waterholes, and people have reported black panther sightings here. The Runijhuni nature trail also starts near the gate. You can walk it with a guide in the buffer area. Walking is not allowed in the core zone.

By road, Karmajhiri is about 47 km from Seoni, 141 km from Nagpur, 132 km from Balaghat and 190 km from Jabalpur. All these routes pass through Suktara. It is a good pick for wildlife photographers, birdwatchers and anyone who wants a quieter forest.

Ghatkohka Forest Rest House

Ghatkohka is the smallest of the three, with only two rooms. It stands on the forest road towards Karmajhiri, after Suktara and Badalpar. With so few rooms, there are fewer guests, so the stay feels private and relaxed. A canteen serves guests here as well.

It suits you if you are travelling between Seoni, Nagpur and the Karmajhiri side and want to spend a night in the forest on the way. It is also a good choice if you like offbeat places without crowds. The facilities are basic, and the surroundings are the reason to come. Rooms fill up fast in busy months, so send your request early.

Rukhad Forest Rest House

Rukhad Forest Rest House is in the Rukhad buffer area of Pench. It has front rooms and simpler back rooms, so you can choose the level of comfort you want. There is a canteen here too.

What makes Rukhad special is the forest around it. It is a hilly, green buffer zone with streams and bamboo, and it is part of the corridor that joins Pench with Kanha Tiger Reserve. Tigers, leopards and gaur pass through this area, and tigress sightings are reported often. Rukhad also offers cycling safaris, which are rare in Pench. Gypsy safaris in the Rukhad buffer zone are limited to 15 vehicles in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. Permits for this zone are not sold online. You have to buy them at the Turia gate.

Which Pench Forest Rest House Should You Choose?

Karmajhiri is the easiest choice for most people. It has the most room types, a canteen, and a gate that sees fewer gypsies than the busy Turia side. If you want something small and peaceful, Ghatkohka has only two rooms and sits on the road to Karmajhiri. Rukhad is better for people who like buffer zone safaris, want to be near the Pench–Kanha tiger corridor, or want to try cycling. One thing to remember before you book: the safari gates are far from each other. Choose a rest house close to the gate you plan to use, or you may end up driving a long way in the dark every morning.
